Probably the most well-known travel destination in Slovenia is Lake Bled. This iconic sight has become a favorite location of Instagrammers who are always in the search of stunning photography spots. However, Slovenia is also home to countless other lakes that are just as beautiful, including lake Bohinj. Just like Lake Bled, Bohinj is situated along the Julian Alps and makes up a perfect day trip idea from Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia.

Slovenia is much more than just pretty lakes. The underground system of Slovenia holds thousands of caves hidden underground, of which 22 are open to the public. If you are a big nature and geology enthusiast, you will find Slovenian caves fascinating. Each cave offers an opportunity to explore unique karst formations that have been growing for millions of years.

Among the most popular caves is Postojna Cave which attracts over 600,000 visitors per year. The cave not only reveals amazing formations but also is home to the olm, a small blind animal of the color of human skin that lives in the waters in the cave. Another notable cave is the Škocjan Cave complex which is thought to be up to 5,000 years old. Here you can observe the ancient stalagmites and stalactites.

Slovenia is full of waterfalls and gorges waiting to be discovered. One of the top destinations to visit in the country is Savica Waterfall which is located not too far away from Lake Bohinj. The lake is known for its unique ‘A’ shape that makes water flow divided underground. The beautiful emerald color of the water adds to the beauty of this 78 meters high waterfall. To reach the waterfall you will need to climb up 500 steps. But the hike up through the forest is an adventure on its own that makes the place even more special.

Another beautiful water-related spot in Slovenia is the Tolmin Gorges. This wild nature gorges system is located at the lower tip of the Triglav National Park. Here you can walk along the beautiful surging ravine, admire incredible rock formations, and relax near the waterfall or in the natural thermal springs. You can choose one of the many winding paths down and up the gorge that will take you to the most beautiful spots of this natural wonder.

One thing Slovenia is really proud of is its extensive hiking trail system. The best place for hiking enthusiasts is definitely the Triglav national park and the Julian Alps. Here you can choose from easy half-day hikes to more complex and strenuous multi-day hikes. There is something for everyone, no matter how advanced you are.

Among the most beautiful hikes is the Seven Lake Valley hike and the ascent to Mount Vogel. In the winter, you can enjoy skiing in the same area surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Another beautiful hiking destination is the famous Soča Valley which is known for its emerald blue water. The valley has even been featured in one of the Narnia movies because of its earthy beauty.
