When Wishes Come True – Movies About Wish Fulfillment

It is not for nothing that they say: "Be careful what you wish for, it might just come true". The main protagonists of this weekend‘s movie picks will experience the privilege of being granted their wishes. Whether they come true with the help of supernatural powers or simply through absurd flukes, the reality may prove to be quite different from the expectation.

Pleasantville

In Pleasantville, life flows painfully slowly and predictably. Pleasantville is a BW TV program which presents an idealistic look back at the 1950s. David (Tobey Maguire) is a teenager and a big fan of the program who wishes life could be like the life he sees in Pleasantville. His sister Jennifer (Reese Witherspoon) is a different cup of tea and absolutely doesn’t understand her brother’s wish. When they both end up in the show, having stumbled into it by accident, things start quickly changing directions, and Jennifer brings some colour into life in Pleasantville.

Only You

When she was a girl, it was predicted that Faith would one day meet the man who would become the man in her life, and his name would be Damon Bradley. Many years have passed, and Damon hasn’t shown up. With nothing else to do, Faith is marrying another man…and just when she is trying on her wedding dress, the phone rings, and on the other end of the line is Damon Bradley… Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr. in the title roles of the pre-destined couple.

Big

A humorous family film with a young Tom Hanks in the main role. The wish-come-true brings the thirteen-year-old Josh into the world of adults, only to find that the missed years of natural growing up have left gaps. And the gaps create most of the hilarious situations, which are complemented with well written dialogue. Being adult seems to be quite exciting, but something is missing at the end.

Coraline

If you like stories like Alice in Wonderland, this is a movie for you:  an incredible parallel fantasy world that seems like a dream come true for eleven-year-old Coraline…until she realises the pitfalls of this perfect, make-believe world.

Florence Foster Jenkins

A truly remarkable true story of a woman whose only passion was singing and not even her total lack of any ability to carry a tune could stop her from performing in Carnegie Hall.  A stunning performance by Meryl Streep in the title role with Hugh Grant as her partner, patiently fullfiling the only wish of the woman he loves.
