From our last destination country of university cities, which was New Zealand, we are moving to a new one - Canada. There is one conflicting situation about studying in Canada which is one of the major destinations for international students.
On one hand, international students must pay a much higher fees than the locals. The locals pay an average of around 7,000 Canadian Dollars per year while an international student is charged around 27,000 Canadian Dollars per year. On the other hand, international students can qualify for many of the scholarships, some of which are fully funded. We have previously published an article on the subject. Both, the provinces and the federal government, recognize the need for talent and earmark substantial funds for international students each year.
Given the respect and understanding by the authorities for the need towards immigration by qualified individuals, a vast percentage of international students are allowed to apply for permanent residency immediately after completing the first year of studies. Many of the international students also apply for citizenship soon after graduating and some even before they are out of university.
Cosmopolitan Toronto
Toronto, the melting pot of different cultures, is the most cosmopolitan city in the country. Be it the students from different parts of the world or the millions of tourists that visit each year, it all adds to the atmosphere. So much so that they even have a Little Italy, a Little Portugal and Little China. The street signs in these ‘Little Places’ are in the language of the respective countries, apart from French and English. More than 180 languages are spoken in the city. This should give you a further understanding of how cosmopolitan is the city. Even though Toronto is cold, it has almost 300 days of sunshine each year. It deserves a mention that over 50 percent of the people living in the city, either have a university degree or a diploma.
Built along Lake Ontario which is one of the Great Lakes in America an international student will have no dearth of activities in this city, including swimming in the lake during summers. Over and above are any number of restaurants, cafes and green spaces in this city of skyscrapers.

Even though the cost of living in Toronto is well below New York, you will still need about Canadian Dollars 1,800 to 2,000 each month towards your expenses inclusive of a shared accommodation, in addition to the fees.
