This week in the weekend movie picks we offer a tribute to one of the motion picture industry‘s foremost directors, Miloš Forman, who passed away last week at the age of 86. His movies are among the best, and here are the five movies that we believe are his most notable.
The Firemen’s Ball
While still in Czechoslovakia, Miloš Forman revealed his abilities unforgettably with the movie The Firemen’s Ball, which was nominated at the Academy Awards in the Foreign Film category for its un-compromised look into the life of the Czech petite bourgeoisie against the backdrop of a firemen’s ball. The movie’s satyrical tone got a poor reception from the Czech political establishment of those days.
One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest
The movie rights to the book were lying in one of the Douglas family’s drawers before the book first appeared on shelves in book shops. Kirk Douglas bought the film rights in 1962, but shooting for the actual movie started more than a decade later. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest brought real success to Miloš Forman in the USA. The movie won 5 Oscars and was also the starting point for the careers of multiple actors.
Hair
Studying people and setting them before mirrors seems to a theme in all of Forman’s movies. Hair criticised the Vietnam War and the apathy of people towards it. The generational problem, the rebellion against conservatism, the newly established Hippie movement – that is Hair.
Amadeus
Eight Oscars, four Golden Globes, and several others Awards are the measure of Amadeus. A magnificent historical biographical movie about the brilliant music of Mozart. Confidently one of the best movies ever.
The People vs. Larry Flynt
Another excellent biographical film, this one about the controversial Larry Flynt – the publisher of Hustler magazine with Woody Harrelson in the title role as Larry Flynt and Courtney Love as his fourth wife, Althea. The movie follows the big success of Flynt‘s newly established porn magazine and his legal battle over the issue of obscenity. It eventually led to an attempt on Flynt’s life, in front of the courthouse in Gwinnett County, Georgia, which left him partially paralysed.
