This week, we continue our look back at the history of the film industry, and the next decade – the fifties – brings some iconic movies that are enjoyable even today.
Roman Holiday
The charming Audrey Hepburn stars in the role that got her her first Oscar. The simple story of a princess who for one night excapes her duties and explores Rome in the company of an American journalist (Gregory Peck) is the perfect choice for a summer movie.
Twelve Angry Men
A drama that takes place in a courtroom where twelve average American men are about to decide the guilt or innocence of a man who is accused of murdering his father. In a closed room, with a clear plot, the movie goes beyond the framework of its story line, and via the main protagonists studies each individual closely and through them the tendencies of the surrounding society.
Singin’ in the Rain
A hit musical with a theme song that may have become even more famous than the movie itself. Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, and Debbie Reynolds in the optimistic and funny film that you will want to watch again.
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor in the film with a distinctive title, about a couple that is going through marital problems. Their emotions are so strong that they almost make the viewer believe they are real.
Some Like It Hot
And for our last movie, here is a real jewel – a famous musical comedy parodying gangster films. Joe and Jerry are two musicians on the run from gangsters. Seizing an off-the-wall opportunity, they cross dress as women to be part of a girls‘ orchestra. And one of the members is – Marilyn Monroe herself. An unforgettable series of crazy moments, funny dialogue, and of course the cast – make this film a classic.
