Studies in a Northern Country – University City Helsinki, Finland

The country is known for its saunas and lakes. There are almost 200,000 lakes and practically every office has a sauna. Even Burger King decided to have one. Nudity is vastly accepted and the male and female colleagues share the sauna during or after office hours.

Studying in the happiest country in the world

According to the U.N., Finland is the happiest country in the world. And that says a considerable lot.

At the moment there is a clear marked off policy concerning foreign students. For those from within the EU and the EEA, the university is free and since 2017 students coming from other countries must pay university fees ranging from 8,000 to 18,000 Euros per year.

However, this might change in the future on account of the world’s second-youngest prime minister who took over recently and is a social democrat, simultaneously, the demographics are in favour of having young foreigners move into the country since the percentage of those over 65 has increased from 13.5 percent from the year 2000 to over 22 percent now.

How to earn and learn in Finland

For those wanting to earn and learn, the ones from the EU and the EEA do not require a work permit. And the others need to apply for one and are allowed to work 25 hours a week but also full time during vacations.

Even though the minimum wages are between 7.3 Euros to 14 Euros per hour depending upon the work. It is more likely for a university student to earn close to the higher range.

Since it’s a cold country the Finnish people, apart from meeting in cafes, exploring the outdoors for which there are plenty of opportunities. Music; particularly heavy metal, have managed to create some unique forms of entertainment such as:

  • wife carrying championships,
  • mosquito hunting competition
  • and swamp football.

Two of the important things that foreign students report are that they feel safe in the country and that the universities have excellent research facilities.
