After covering university cities in Italy we move on to France. Lille in the north of France in close proximity to the border with Belgium is well and truly a university city.
With a population of a little over 200,000, students make up close to forty-five percent. Discover with us Lille, France.
School fee
Until last year university education was virtually free in France, both for the French and the foreign students. This year onwards the fees structure for foreign students has been set at:
2770 Euros per year for a bachelor’s degree
3770 Euros per year for a master’s degree
380 Euros per year for a doctorate
Unquestionably a cosmopolitan city and a historical center, Lille in the flatlands of France has seen many wars. It was the location of prolonged wars, both I and II. To this day you can see cannonballs protruding out of the old stock exchange building.
Apart from the many historical attractions an important place to visit is the magnificent Palais des Beaux-Arts and Grande Place where people from different parts of the world converge. When you arrive at Lille at the Flandres Station you arrive at a piece of art and architecture and proceed into a city of richness and splendor.
The people of Lille are proud of their ‘gastronomy’ which in English may sound a little unappetizing but the French mean it in a good way, meaning exceptional food and cuisine.
Once a year millions of Europeans descend into the city for its famous flea market called Braderie de Lille.
As usual, we cover the public universities because of their affordability and quality of education. Also as usual we would suggest you go through each of the websites to find the courses most suited to you.

The living cost
The cost of living as in most of France is fairly high and in the opinion of the writer you can live fairly well at between 1200 to 1300 $ per month including shared accommodation. The people of France value their privacy and it’s difficult to find a paying guest accommodation though it’s not unheard of.
