University Cities – Brno, Czech Republic

With this article we begin a series that shall provide you with information on cities that distinguish themselves as educational centers. We begin with Brno in the Czech Republic which  is a city of many dimensions. Among these the city is known for its educational institutions that attract students from far and wide. With an estimated population of 1.3 million, comprises of over 20 percent that are students.

It is important to note we at YT are focused towards the development of youth and will take into consideration the ranking, research facilities, affordability in terms the structure of the fees and cost of living as well as employability after qualifying.

Brno University of Technology

Established in 1899, this more than a century old institution has over 23,000 students. Brno University of Technology is one of the largest academic establishments in the Czech Republic. They have the following faculties:

  • Architecture
  • Engineering and communication
  • Chemistry
  • Business and management
  • Civil Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Fine Arts
  • Forensic Engineering

University of Agriculture in Brno

This university is also almost a century old and is known as the Mendel University. They have the following faculties. Apart from Horticulture which is located in Lednice about 60 km away all the other faculties are in Brno:

All of the universities maintain contacts with several universities, organizations, institutions, and companies around the world and engage in many of the projects within the EU and non EU countries. Most of them have exchange programs and research facilities. In addition to Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate courses many of the universities also offer short term and certificate courses. Teaching for many of the programmes is in English and some in Czech only. It’s recommended that the website of each of the universities be checked thoroughly to identify your favourite discipline and the medium of instruction. 

Fees:

As in most of Europe the fees towards going to public universities in the Czech Republic is nominal and usually well under US$ 1000 inclusive of the course material.

Academic Year:

At most universities the academic year usually commences on October 1 for the winter semester. December 22 to January 2 are customarily Christmas vacations. Around mid February, begins the summer semester. July 1 till the end of August is typically the summer vacation and the academic year concludes at the end of September. However, it is suggested that the dates must be confirmed with each of the universities.

Admission:

The process of admission at most universities begins with a registration process around September/October for which the fees is a nominal US$ 20 to 30. This is followed by an entrance examination and sometimes a personal interview. The ratio of admission seekers is generally 10:1.

Affordability:

In terms of Cost of living index Brno ranks 356th out of 540 cities in the world, which makes it quite an affordable city and a single person’s monthly costs according to the index should be US$ 573 without rent. In the opinion of the author a student on a limited budget can manage to live respectably inclusive of rent between 500 to 600 US$, if she/he lives in a shared accommodation.

Entertainment:

Wherever students want to get together and have fun, they can. The city has many sports facilities, pubs, movie halls and other weekly/monthly events. These are all within reach of an average student.
