Six European research grants secured by the Irish universities
Irish Times reports that six lucrative European research grants have been awarded to the Irish universities.
This represents an enormous improvement, since in the last round, only one European Research Council (ERC) grant was given to the Irish university. Maynooth University secured one grant, NUI Galway two grants and Trinity College Dublin secured three grants.
Maynooth University will be researching EU Law and the protection of rights of persons with disabilities, NUI Galway will be researching Bone disease and cellular tissue, and Trinity will be researching personalized medicine, macular degeneration and perceptual decision-making.
Out of 300 ERC grants, Ireland took 14thplace with six awards, while Germany was the most successful one with 52 grants.
Violence at the Ethiopian universities
Reuters reports that the lives of seven students were lost in the past three months due to the ongoing conflict at universities across the country.
Ministry of Science and Higher Education spokesman Dechassa Gurmu said: “We have decided to deploy federal police to all 45 public universities across the country because the security situation could not be managed by campus security, some of whom were implicated in violent clashes.
” Reports also suggest that five campus guards have been arrested for taking part in the clashes with students.
Confucian Institute closed in Belgium
South China Morning Post reports that the Chinese state-funded Confucius Institute in Belgium was closed due to accusation that the former professor conducted espionage.
Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) stated: “The university is of the opinion that cooperating with the institution is no longer consistent with its policies and objectives.”
Song Xinning, former head of the Confucius Institute at VUB is barred from entering the Schengen Area for eight years.
