Repitiendo Espanol With Mexican Movies

Repetition is never enough, and therefore we now present a second round of Spanish lessons. After a selection of Spanish movies we offer a list of Mexican films. Get ready and enjoy the show.

Amores Perros

A little bit of a Mexican classic, this Oscar-nominated movie from director Alejandro González Iñárritu presents a complicated series of enigmatic stories which are intertwined with the car accident that opens the film.

Las Elegidas (The Chosen Ones)

Don’t be led astray by the title. The movie does not relate to any higher meaning. As a matter of fact, the story is as raw as it can get. Ulysis and Sofia are teenagers in a relationship…except that Ulysis, under pressure from his family, is about to entrap Sofia in the family prostitution business.

La dictadura perfecta (The Perfect Dictatorship)

Not for the first time…we observe that the best way to cover up a political scandal is to convince the media to focus on an artificial distraction. If only it weren’t that the cover up turns out differently from what was originally intended. And the media plays the main role in it. Corruption is a powerful bit of common ground. Based on a real news controversy during the Mexican presidental election in 2012.

Elvira, te daría mi vida pero la estoy usando (Elvira I would Give You my Life but I’m Using It)

Who knows where the cliché of leaving to buy cigarettes and never coming back originated. Elvira, mother of two, has to face the fact that her husband Gustavo disappear one night after he leaves for cigarettes, Gustavo has his reasons for it, which Elvira is going to find out, all too painfully.
