This is a subgenre in the independent film sector. These are low budget movies based on dialogues among young people about their relationships. The movies are largely free of action or even plot twists.

The term appeared in the 1960s with the pioneer work of Jean Rouch, who was the first filmmaker to produce this type of documentary, sometimes also known as observational cinema. It is a combination of improvisation and documentary.
