History, Culture, Fashion, Cuisine – Why Not Study in Milan

Continuing with our series on university cities in different parts of the world, in this mini series we will cover Italy, beginning with Milan.

Milan, the second largest city in Italy in terms of population is the commercial centre of Italy and one of the major fashion capitals of the world. Not just that, Milan, the same as the rest of Italy abounds in history, great landscapes and skylines, mouth watering food and most of all welcoming, affable and surprisingly chummy inhabitants. If you’re an international student thinking of living in Italy don’t be surprised if the matronly looking neighbour brings you a pasta or a pie soon after you move in.

University education, same as in most of Europe, in Milan is quite affordable. Our focus is on public universities. Undergraduate studies cost between Euros 1000 to 4000 depending on the university. Private institutions tend to cost much more.

If you plan to study in Italy, you will need to submit attested copies of your high school certificates and two academic references. If doing a course in English language you will have to establish your fluency through IELTS,  TOEFL, C1 or similar. Nonetheless, you will need working knowledge of Italian. Some universities also demand GMAT and GRE. If you plan to do your course in the beautiful language of Italian, you shall have to be entirely fluent at the language.

There is a vast range of courses you can choose from and we would recommend you visit the websites of each of the universities to narrow down to what may be most suitable for you. A little word of caution, unlike the Czech Republic, Austria and Germany, their websites are not the easiest to wade through.

For those who wish to work and study, Italy allows a student to work 4 hours a day to a maximum of 20 a week. At the same time, the way the Italian economy has been doing since the crisis of 2008/2009, it’s difficult to say how easy it may be for a student to get a part time job. And to be fair, if you are well heeled this is a city of art, commerce, design, education, entertainment, fashion, finance and of course tourism.

Cost of living

The index says 873 $ exclusive of accommodation. This may well be true of Milan and accommodation, even a shared one will set you back 500 to 600 $ a month. This is a city of many positives with undeniable energy, elegance and charm but accommodations can be quite deficient in space.
