The emancipation of women is a process that has been accelerating with every passing year. Unfortunately, there is still a long way to go. Given the fact that women, at one time, had an important and respected position within society, it is sad to observe quite the opposite in so-called modern times. Nevertheless, let's be happy that the movement is in place and watch some of the most powerful movies on this topic.
The Stoning of Soraya M.
A story from an Iranian village, based on real events. The heartbreaking drama of a young woman, falsely accused of adultery, and her death sentence. Later, her aunt takes the opportunity to meet with a French war correspondent to reveal to him the sub-human conditions that orthodox Islamic women must endure.
The Color Purple
The journey of the illiterate Celie from a small village in the American South to become a strong, emancipated woman is based on the Pulitzer prize-winning book by Alice Walker, with Whoopi Goldberg in the title role.
Sworn Virgin
The Albanian countryside – Alba Rohrwacher, in the role of Hana/Mark, resolves to return to her female identity four years after undergoing a traditional gender transformation from female to male (the locally recognized right of women to give up a woman‘s inferior role and conduct themselves as men in exchange for a promise of purity). An interesting view of the limitations that affect both sides.
Suffragette
Carey Mulligan in the title role in a historical drama set in the early years of the previous century, featuring the movement of women who fought for the right to vote with all the means they had.
Osama
Last on our list of emancipation movies is a strong debut film by Siddiq Barmak, following the life of a young girl called Osama, who was living in Afganistan when the Taliban took power. Responding to a crucially important family circumstance, Osama dresses like a boy in order to be able to work and feed her family. Through her eyes, the viewer learns about the extraordinarily difficult position of women in Afghan society and the cruelties perpetrated against them.
