Continuing With University Cities Marseille and Avignon in France

In this article we continue with the university country of France and in particular will dwell upon Marseille and Avignon. The university of Avignon comes under the aegis of the university of Marseille.

Marseille, figuratively speaking, is just a stone’s throw from the magnificent Cote d’Azur and is among the oldest port cities in Europe. The port of Marseille is the largest in France. The founding of the city goes back to as early as 600 BC. With throngs of locals and tourists this is a city that never sleeps.

Avignon which is a little over an hour away from Marseille is a city most known for Le Palais des Papes. This is the city the Pope took off too when he fled Rome and Avignon became the seat of the Papacy. Le Palais des Papes is the largest Gothic structure in the world. A skyscraper of those times.

Port of Marseille, France

Marseille quite unjustifiably has a reputation of being unsafe. Like any large city it has some areas that may be a little risky but the centre and the touristic and university areas are certainly quite secure. Being a port city where fishing is one of the major trades, the seafood is fresh and delicious. In fact, they have a local dish where the soup is made from fish and the same fish that was used for the soup is then cooked and served.

Avignon on the other hand is known for its beauty and architecture. The centre of the city is a UNESCO world heritage site and attracts its fair share of tourists.

Both the cities are quite cosmopolitan, have great cafes, night clubs and you name it. So students find it quite comfortable living in these cities. They also host a fair number of trade exhibitions that senior students can visit to hand over their resumes directly to the top brass. Part time jobs in Marseille are easier to find.

The French law allows students to work for approximately 20 hours a week and the minimum wage is close to 9 Euros an hour.

Transportation in these cities, as in most of France is affordable and excellent.

As usual we would recommend that you visit the websites of the universities to look from the host of courses what may be most suitable for you :

Cost of Living

For both of the cities it is suggested to have a budget of 1100 to 1200 $ per month for your expenses apart from the annual fees that you will pay to the university. This budget would allow for shared accommodations.
