The Youth Ag Summit is a global forum where young leaders can collaborate to develop sustainable solutions for food security and global agriculture, and work towards becoming global instruments of change. The Summit is organized by Bayer and willtake place on November 4-6, 2019 in Brasilia, Brasil. The deadline to apply is on 10 January 2019.
Successful participants will receive an all-expenses paid trip to Brazil and the chance to learn from some of the world’s leading agricultural experts. The Summit takes place every two years, with previous editions having been held in Canada (2013), Australia (2015) and Belgium (2017). The next edition of the Youth Ag Summit will take place in Brasilia, Brazil from November 4 – 6, 2019.
The Youth Ag Summit theme is Feeding a Hungry Planet. The world’s population is expected to reach almost 10 billion by 2050. To feed everyone, we need to produce 50% more food with less land and fewer resources. Cutting-edge farming practices can help, but many people are wary and misinformed when it comes to modern agriculture. We need to bridge the disconnect between those who produce our food and those who consume it.
100 young leaders aged 18-25 (as of 3 November 2019), who are interested in agriculture, international development, environmental stewardship, food security, biotechnology or farming, will be selected to participate in the Summit. They are expected to come to the table with an appetite to advocate for agriculture, a concrete project idea, and a desire to make a lasting impact on food security. The delegates will be supported throughout the Summit by external mentors and Youth Ag Summit alumni.
The costs for attending the Summit are covered by the Youth Ag Summit organizers. These include: flights, transportation, accommodation, and catering during the event. Any other travel costs unrelated to Youth Ag Summit activities will not be covered by the organizers.
Main criteria
- The Summit is open to applications from young people aged 18-25, who are passionate about agriculture, food security, environmental stewardship, world hunger, biotechnology, farming, or animal husbandry. However, applicants do not have to be farmers – previous Summit participants have included lawyers, doctors, teachers, and business management students;
- All applicants are asked to submit a video pitch for an idea that could contribute to tackling the underlying causes of food insecurity, and the impact it is having on a growing population. The core competition question is based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (particularly SDG 2: Zero Hunger);
- The video submission will run until 10 January 2019. The final selection of delegates will be announced in May 2019.
Applications should address the following context in their video submission:
Who are you and why are you interested in agriculture, or passionate about food security?
What is your (big or small) project idea for “feeding a hungry planet”?
How did you get to this project idea and what is your master plan?
Why are you so passionate about your project?
How would you use the opportunity of being a YAS delegate to make a change in your local community?
