UN Young Professionals Programme 2020

The Young Professionals Programme is a recruitment initiative for talented, highly qualified professionals to start a career as an international civil servant with the United Nations Secretariat. It consists of an entrance examination and professional development programmes. It is a two-year paid internship. The deadline is on 31 October 2020.

UN Secretariat duty station or peacekeeping operations

The Secretariat carries out the substantive and administrative work of the United Nations as directed by the General Assembly, the Security Council and the other organs. The main functions of the Secretariat are to gather and prepare background information on various issues so that government delegates can study the facts and make recommendations and to organize international conferences amongst others.

Young professionals who pass the examination will be placed in the roster of successful YPP candidates. They will be eligible for consideration for positions in any UN Secretariat duty station or peacekeeping operation. Job offers to successful candidates are made on an ongoing basis, but placement takes place on a quarterly basis and is conducted centrally 4 times a year. Initially, the selected candidate will be appointed for two years. Prior to the beginning of the initial assignment, candidates will attend a two-week orientation programme. After the end of the first assignment, the candidate will be appointed for the second assignment in a different duty station. Young professionals who passed the UN YPP examination and got employed in the United Nations receive an attractive remuneration package with competitive pay and benefits.

Main criteria

The YPP examination is held once a year and is open to nationals of countries participating in the annual recruitment exercise. Candidates must hold at least a first-level university degree relevant for the exam subject you are applying for. You must be 32 or younger in the year of the examination. You must be fluent in either English or French.

Eligible countries: Afghanistan, Andorra, Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahrain, Belarus, Belize, Brazil, Brunei Darussalam, Cabo Verde, Cambodia, Central African Republic, China, Comoros, Cyprus, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Dominica, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Grenada, Guinea-Bissau, Indonesia, Iran (the Islamic Republic of), Japan, Kiribati, Kuwait, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Marshall Islands, Micronesia (the Federated States of), Monaco, Montenegro, Mozambique, Nauru, Norway, Oman, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Qatar, Republic of Korea, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Sao Tome and Principe, Saudi Arabia, Solomon Islands, South Sudan, Suriname, Syrian Arab Republic, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Turkmenistan, Tuvalu, United Arab Emirates, United States of America, Vanuatu, Venezuela (the Bolivarian Republic of)
