Punch-Drunk Love (2003)

Deep and at the same time light romantic comedy Punch-Drunk Love (2003) directed by the famous Paul Thomas Anderson, starring Adam Sandler, Emily Watson, and Philip Seymour-Hoffman would definitely bring a smile to your face.

Barry Egan (Adam Sandler), an unsophisticated middle-aged small entrepreneur is a pure product of the sad background of his seven emotionally abusive sisters. Using phone sex services (though not for its direct purposes) he would bump into a small criminal gang led by Dean Trumbell (Philip Seymour Hoffman) that would extort money from him. However, he is lucky enough to meet Lena (Emily Watson) who would make him a completely different person. Adam Sandler, a comic actor that showed his character Barry in a peculiar character development journey, (those who would say “he can’t even act!” definitely should watch this movie) demonstrating a wide range of emotions: starting as a very insecure and punchable guy and ending as a confident and sassy man. Emily Watson, an Oscar-nominated more serious and dramatic actress, played Barry’s love interest in an eloquent way. An Oscar-winning Philip Seymour Hoffman, even though playing a villain in Barry’s happiness, made his rare appearances on screen extremely memorable and funny.

When in Rome (2010)

Now when Covid-19 seems to slowly fade away from a hazard mode and when we can travel more freely, you can actually go to Italy or get some Italian vibes by watching When in Rome (2010).

Beth Martin (Kristen Bell) is a young, beautiful and successful woman who gave up hope for a happy love life that is saddened by the news of her younger sister’s upcoming wedding in Italy. She makes a few admirers when taking out their coins from Fontana di Trevi in Rome, and falls in love with a handsome Nick Beamon (Josh Duhamel). We get to see how Nick would have to prove to Beth that he fell for her, not under the spell of the love fountain, accompanied by amusing interventions of the equally stubborn admirers. Will Beth get the love of her life? Order pizza or make some pasta Bolognese and go see the movie.

She’s the Man (2006)

You will definitely not get bored while watching She’s the Man (2006), a romantic comedy about Viola Hastings (Amanda Bynes) who can give odds to any guy in playing football when her team falls apart as well as her relationship, but she doesn’t get depressed. Instead, she decides to impersonate her brother to sign up for another football team. This already complicated tangle is getting even more complicated when she falls in love with her roommate Duke Orsino (Channing Tatum), who is already in love with Olivia Lennox (Laura Ramsey), who falls in love with Viola as a guy… You should just watch this one to get some clarity.

Only You (1994)

If you are still not over Italian vibes, you could watch Only You (1994). Faith Corvatch (Marisa Tomei) is obsessed with the name Damon Bradley. Why is that? The thing is that in her youth some fortune-teller told her that the love of her life would be named Damon Bradley. However, Faith gradually left this idea because she was going to marry her boyfriend, till she got a call from her fiance’s acquaintance named Damon Bradley who says he can’t make it to the wedding because he is in Italy. Escaping from the altar, she decides to go to Venice to find him, and … indeed meets a charming guy (Robert Downey Jr.), who says he is Damon Bradley. Although Faith is crazy happy about it, she doesn’t know that he lied about the name just because he fell for her. Would this be a deal-breaker for Faith? Or would she understand that love doesn’t depend on a name alone?

Shall We Dance (2003)

Tired of everyday routine? So is John Clark (Richard Gere), a workaholic lawyer who has everything — a wonderful wife, delightful kids, a comfortable life. Everything, at first glance, is good, but John is missing something. Every evening, on the way from work, he sees a beautiful woman in the window — a dance teacher Paulina (Jennifer Lopez) . To get to know her better, John decides to take dance lessons from her. Soon his life is filled with the pleasure of meeting some of his new friends and of course dancing, which gradually leads him to the ballroom dancing championship. A heart-warming Shall We Dance (2003) will certainly bring you positive vibes.
