About Fulbright

Fulbright scholarships are educational awards offered as part of an international scholarship exchange program. The program’s goal is to enhance the meeting of minds between citizens of the United States and other nations via educational and cultural exchange. It was initiated by Arkansas Senator J. William Fulbright and continued by the Fulbright Act of 1946. The Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act of 1961, often known as the Fulbright-Hays Act, unified and strengthened the program. Fulbright programs are founded on a series of bilateral diplomatic agreements that lay ultimate responsibility for operations with the United States Department of State. Overseas management, on the other hand, is delegated to educational foundations in which member states and their academic communities are involved; some other governments contribute to the program’s expenditures along with the U.S. government.

U.S. Embassy In Cameroon Fulbright Teaching Excellence And Achievement Program (Fully Funded)

Applications are open for the U.S. Embassy in Cameroon Fulbright Teaching Excellence And Achievement Program 2022-2023. The highly qualified teaching staff in Cameroonian Secondary Schools are encouraged to participate. The scholarship is sponsored by the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Teachers who are selected to participate in the Fulbright TEA Program will:

• Take part in tailored graduate-level seminars at a US host university.
• Observe classes, co-teach, and share their expertise with US colleagues in US secondary schools.
• Engage in an online professional learning community with other participants to share best practices and other elements of host and home country educational systems.
• Take part in other educational and cultural activities while in the United States.
• Upon returning home, teachers will be expected to share the knowledge and experience gained in the program with teachers and students in their home schools and within their communities.

Eligibility

• Current secondary-level, full-time teachers of English, English as a Foreign Language (EFL), Maths, Science, or Social Studies, including special education teachers in those subjects at institutions serving primarily a local population are eligible for the program.
• Applicants must hold at least a Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent and have completed at least five years of full-time teaching by the start of the program.
• Secondary-level teachers include both middle and high school teachers serving students between approximately 12 and 18 years of age.
• Applicants must reside in their country of citizenship at the time of application and of program participation.

Reporting Complexity: A Study Tour in the US for Journalists from Central and Eastern Europe

The Romanian-US Fulbright Commission, in collaboration with Fulbright Commissions in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and the Slovak Republic, invites practicing journalists to apply for a two-week study visit in the United States aimed at developing skills, knowledge, and awareness related to reporting on complex issues. The trip will take place in October 2022 (tentative dates: October 15-October 29, 2022).

• The program is offered free of charge and with the following costs covered by the organizers: insurance, visa costs, flights to/from the US and local travel in the US, hotels, meals, and incidental expenses while in the US. Participants are required to cover local transportation costs in their own countries if necessary, personal expenses, and miscellaneous expenses.

Eligibility

• Practicing journalists with a minimum of one year of professional journalism experience in any type of media (print, broadcast, or digital).
• Journalists from Romania, Albania, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Republic of North Macedonia, Serbia, and the Slovak Republic are eligible to apply.
• Applicants with English command at a minimum B2 level can apply.
• Applicants with strong professional background in the field demonstrated through recent work samples (in English or local language).
• All else being equal, preference is given to journalists focusing on science reporting, public health, economics, and other data-heavy fields.

Applicants with US citizenship or permanent residency are not eligible for this program. Preference will be given to applicants who have not previously been awarded a Fulbright grant or who have not had extensive experience in the US.

Fulbright South African Research Scholar Program (Fully Funded)

The Fulbright South African Research Scholar Program (SARSP) provides South African university professors or research institute personnel with the chance to do research in their field of expertise in a US academic or research institution for three to nine months. A research grant allows the scholar to do high-level research in a US educational institution in order to develop academic programs or curricula at their home university. Applicants must have a track record of successful scholarly research and publication.

Benefits

• Monthly stipend is based on the cost of living at the research site.
• Monthly dependent allowance for accompanying dependents.
• Round trip airfare for the grantee.
• Round trip airfare for one dependent accompanying the grantee for a minimum period of 80% on an eight- to nine-month grant.
• Excess baggage allowance for return travel.
• Professional allowance for books, conferences, and seminars.
• Settling-in allowance.
• Primary medical insurance coverage for the grantee.

Eligibility 

• Be a South African citizen OR a permanent resident with a minimum of five years of permanent residency status in South Africa (Please note: SA nationals with dual SA/US citizenship are not eligible for the program).
• The Fulbright SARSP is open to scholars in all disciplines and without regard to gender or age; however, proposals for clinical medical research involving patient contact cannot be approved under the Fulbright Program.
• Applications for doctoral dissertation research, post-doctoral research immediately following completion of a doctorate degree, or general professional travel, are ineligible.
• Preference will be given to candidates who have not previously received a Fulbright scholar grant.
• Preference will be given to candidates who have had no experience or only limited experience in the US.
• Applicants must have sufficient proficiency in English to carry out their projects and collaborate effectively with colleagues. TOEFL exams are not required. However, the US Embassy reserves the right to administer an English language test, if necessary, to evaluate applicants’ language skills.
• Applicants must be in good health. Successful candidates will be asked to submit a Medical History and Examination Report.
• Scholars who were unsuccessful in previous competitions may re-apply.  Repeat applicants should revise their proposals, update curriculum vitae, and obtain current letters of reference/invitation.

Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program – Media Literacy Cohort

The Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program – Media Literacy Cohort has opened applications for the year 2022-2023. The Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement (Fulbright TEA) Program will bring international secondary-level teachers to the United States for a six-week professional development program in which they will attend academic seminars at a host university, observe and share their expertise with American teachers and students, and develop action plans to promote media literacy and critical thinking skills in their home schools, classrooms, and communities.

The Fulbright TEA Media Literacy Cohort is sponsored by the United States Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), with funds given by the United States Government and managed by IREX in partnership with the Fulbright Commission.

• General academic seminars focusing on new teaching methodologies, lesson planning, and instructional technology training for teachers;
• Specialized seminars with a focus on classroom media literacy and critical thinking skills;
• A practicum of at least 40 hours with a US partner teacher in local secondary schools;

• Have earned a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
• Have completed at least three years of full-time teaching by the start of the program
• Have Romanian citizenship, reside and work in Romania at the time of application and of program participation
• Demonstrate oral and written English language proficiency
• Have experience or demonstrated interest in the field of media literacy and critical thinking
• Demonstrate a commitment to continue teaching after completion of the program
• Have submitted a complete application
