We all want to enjoy the sun and get outside this summer, but it's important to remain safe. Here is how to do it.
While it’s not the official start to summer yet, temperatures are already high, and the sun is out. Now is the time to start thinking about sun safety for the season.
Between articles on the dangers of sunburns and cancer-causing sunscreen, it can be confusing to figure out how to stay safe during the hotter months of the year.
Why Too Much Sun is Dangerous
We need to enjoy some sunshine because the sun is the best source of Vitamin D for humans. However, too much of anything can be dangerous. This could not be more true about the sun!
Exposure to the sun causes age spots, wrinkles, and potentially skin cancer. Although 80% of sun exposure happens to us before 18, it is important to always stay safe in the summer.
Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the US and many other countries. Being in the sun for a long time and getting tan speeds up the adverse side effects that can eventually lead to cancer.
If you plan on spending a lot of time in the sun, you should plan on protecting your skin. You can do this by wearing a hat, some light layers, and of course, sunscreen.
Can Sunscreen Give You Cancer?
There are articles out there that sunscreen can give you cancer. According to the MD Anderson Cancer Center, there has not been any scientific evidence of sunscreen causing cancer.
That being said, some sunscreens contain more chemicals than others. In addition to not being healthy for human skin, some sunscreens cause havoc on the ocean if you go swimming in them.
It is essential to do some research before you pick out your sunscreen for the season. In addition to getting regular sunscreen, you should also keep your lips in mind. Don’t forget to buy some sun-blocking lip balm as well!
What Sunscreens Are Best?
The two ingredients that are now known for harming reefs are oxybenzone and octinoxate.
These are found in some of the cheaper sunscreens and should be avoided if you plan to go swimming in the ocean.
This is an excellent list of sunscreens that are not only reef-safe, but they are also great for sensitive skin. SkinMedica and BLUE LIZARD are two of the many great options to consider.
When picking out sunscreen, consider what activities you’ll be enjoying during your day. Some sunscreens are water and sweat-resistant if you plan on going swimming.
These still need to be reapplied regularly!
Although most higher quality lip balms already have SPF in them, we have our reefs to consider once again.
Do a quick internet search to see if your balm is safe.
If it isn’t, you can still use it if you’re not planning on swimming in the ocean, but consider switching to a more eco-friendly one in the future.
It can be easy to get caught up in the fun and forget about our safety. However, skin cancer is a real issue, and it is more common than you think.
Make sure to take the time to get some good sunscreen, apply it as needed, and take other precautions like wearing a hat and sunglasses when appropriate.
Plus, don’t forget to stay hydrated in the heat while you are living your best life!
