The British company QS Quacquarelli Symonds presented a list of the best cities for students for year 2015. Paris topped the list, followed by Melbourne, London, Sydney and Hong Kong.
The QS Best Student Cities index combined data relating to various aspects of student life, such as universities, student community, affordability, quality of life and employer reputation. The list highlighted 50 of the world’s best cities. In order to be considered for inclusion in the list, a city must meet two prerequisites: population over 250 000, and at least two higher institutions featured in the QS university rankings. On this basis, 116 cities in the world qualified according to current calculations.
For the year 2015, five new measures have been added to the previous assessment process. Each city now receives a score for pollution, safety, transparency and tolerance, plus a score based on The Economist’s Global Livability Ranking.
Last year, Paris still held the number one position, while Melbourne sprung from number five to number two, replacing London. Singapore went down from the third position to the 15th. Although these cities were ranked the best for students, a separate list of most affordable cities was released.
Taipei is reportedly the most affordable for year 2015, the city that ranked 25th in the Best Student Cities list. It owes its first position to relatively low international tuition fees and reasonably low living costs. Taipei is followed by Mexico City, which claims the final place in this year’s top 50 student cities, and Berlin, one of the world’s most popular study destinations.
