About 39 million people worldwide are blind and other 256 million suffer from visual impairments. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that around 80% of these cases are reversible or could have been prevented if patients had access to adequate health care.

The device, which is currently being developed by the company Peek Vision, can connect with a smartphone and will easily allow doctors to perform examinations.

It is placed on the camera and makes the check-up of the retina much easier, using the right amount of light directed at a specific angle. Because of its combination with the camera, the device makes high-resolution images that can be given to another doctor for a second opinion. Watch the video.

Peek Retina helps to identify the conditions such as glaucoma and cataract and will allow patients to receive timely treatment.

The new device will be used for the identification of severe cases of diabetes, malaria, and meningitis, that can impair vision and cause edema in the brain.
