The University of Tokyo provides international students with access to a number of financial aid options that cover various forms and purposes, including school expense exemptions, scholarships, emergency loans, and student discounts. The Graduate School of Science (GSS) Scholarship provides a monthly stipend of 150,000 yen (approx. 1350 USD) to international students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and are willing to study in Japan. The deadline is May 1.
The scholarship period is for a total of five years starting from the enrollment in a master’s degree course to the end of a three-year Ph.D. course. The scholarship will be provided to students beginning from September, 2017 to August, 2022.
In order to apply for the scholarship, applicants should submit the application documents to the International Liaison Office at the Graduate School of Science by post. The application must arrive no later than the last day of the application period. The documents include the application form and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member of your university.
Main criteria
- Applicants should obtain excellent grades and pass the entrance examination for the Master’s Program at the Graduate School of Science;
- Recipients of other scholarships are not eligible to participate;
- High-level academic performance and the submission of an annual research report are required; otherwise, the scholarship will be withdrawn.
