Recently, many of our daily activities have become remote. Words like remote work, remote education, remote services, and remote management are no longer unfamiliar. Many corporations have promoted the concept of ‘Remote Everything’ because it saves them a significant amount of money in overhead costs. This concept appears to be beneficial for the general public as well. It allows them to have access to cheaper services, flexible schooling options, and flexible working conditions. Furthermore, it is anticipated that the future will have more diverse options for remote activities.

Not long ago, the concept of ‘Remote Everything’ was like a fictional fantasy. However, attempts in remote employment, remote healthcare, remote entertainment, and remote learning have skyrocketed during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown seasons. The drastic drop in humans’ interaction with the outside world has led to a new norm of connecting using online platforms.
But more significantly, the lockdown due to the pandemic has caused disruptions of operations in several industries. Consequently, the situation led many corporations to look for smarter, more convenient, more dependable, and more resilient means of operations. On that account, numerous firms have incorporated cutting-edge technological solutions into their operations, which steered the course of businesses to a more remote world.
Even industries that have historically relied on human presence are turning to ‘Remote Everything’ through the integration of machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) into their operations and decision-making. According to the Owl Labs report, 16 percent of companies worldwide are now fully remote, while 44 percent do not allow any form of remote work.
How Is Remote Everything Reshaping Working Conditions?
Working 9-to-5 every day for 40 hours a week is not as glamorous as it was in the past times. It creates a significant amount of stress and imbalance in people’s personal lives. On the other hand, remote workers have better options in controlling their life activities since they have the freedom to allocate a reasonable amount of personal time. Remote work is just another proof that being stuck by remaining seated at one workplace working 9-to-5 is not a guarantee for success.
The growth of ‘Remote Everything’ has been promoted by the advancement of communication technologies. This has served as a milestone for the job market since it enables convenient and easily accessible co-working spaces where remote workers from many sectors may collaborate. With collaborative technologies that can get over time zone constraints, it is even feasible to co-work with individuals who are in different countries.
Another noteworthy benefit is that remote work erases geographical restrictions. It enables firms to have a wider chance of discovering more talented candidates who can be ideal matches for their job openings regardless of their physical residence. It can also play a vital role in fulfilling the goals of companies in their diversity inclusion plans.
Working remotely can also increase productivity. Many workers believe working from the comfort of their homes affords them the time and space to focus on their job since they spend less time traveling and have fewer interruptions during working hours. CNBC reported that employees who work remotely are happier with their careers than those who work in an office. Let’s remember, happier employee results in productive work.
The Future of Remote Everything in the Work Environment
Currently, we are witnessing several remote work platforms that connect businesses and agencies with freelance professionals. Platforms like We Work Remotely, Upwork, Fiverr, LinkedIn, and Appen have been flooded with remote workers and employers at a rapid pace in several job departments. For instance, according to the reports from Upwork, 73 percent of all departments will have remote workers by 2028. In a similar report by Nira, remote work is growing fast and it has been estimated that 70 percent of the workforce will work remotely at least five days a month by 2025.
Even though remote working has a relatively new influence in the work environment, people are already drawn to working remotely. The future will clearly be more remote than today. Before the future catches up though, it seems reasonable to find answers to the following questions: How does remote work impact society and individuals? Can it induce a new culture among the global community? How far are we from fully comprehending the positive and negative impacts of ‘Remote Everything’?
