ACP-EU Culture Program
HEVA, in partnership with the British Council and as part of the global ACP-EU Culture Programme, has established a finance facility for the support of creative and cultural industries in 14 countries in Eastern Africa: ACP-EU Culture Programme (East Africa): Ignite Culture. Applications for the program are open. This grant was designed to enable organizations to successfully develop new ventures, programs, and projects for their target communities and demographics, which will go a long way to making their own work and the work of their target communities more sustainable.
Organization
Since 2013, HEVA has generated insights, rolled out investments, and innovated financial models specifically for the growth of the creative economy in East Africa. HEVA wants to be at the forefront of helping producers of cultural goods and services to build high-value, profitable businesses where new ideas will come to life, and where the highest potential for great profits, great jobs, and happy people will be found.
Benefits
Through grant financing of between 30,000 euros and 180,000 euros, prospective applicants should direct any financial support toward the following activities:
- increasing the quality and/or quantity of creative and cultural goods and/or services
- improving visual literacy of audiences, visibility of makers, and access to new markets for creative and cultural goods and services from Eastern Africa
- building appropriate, industry-ready skills and capacity for young people entering the cultural and creative sectors
- improving the capacity and knowledge of Eastern Africa’s creative and cultural practitioners on policy, legal and financing frameworks impacting the sector and increasing their ability to advocate for more supportive policy and legal structures
Eligibility
Applicants may apply for grant funding of between €30,000 to €180,000. For the purpose of the application, this is divided into three tiers:
- Tier 1 – Applicants can apply for a fixed amount of €30,000
- Tier 2 – Applicants may apply an amount between €31,000 and €90,0000
- Tier 3 – Applicants may apply an amount between €91,000 and €180,000
Eligible organizations/individuals need to be registered no later than 31st December 2017 and must have audited statements either for a half-year period or a full-year period for the years 2017 and/or 2018.

Cultivating the Humanities and Social Sciences Research Grants
Applications are open for Cultivating the Humanities and Social Sciences Research Grants for the year 2022-2023. This grant program is part of a new collaborative transnational project that aims at enhancing the research capabilities of scholars and local institutions, especially in post-conflict and conflict areas, while helping to reduce the social and economic vulnerabilities of South and Southeast Asian countries through policy-relevant research.
Benefits
CHSS grants typically range from $2,000 for a short-term project to $12,000 for the long-term.
Eligibility
- South and Southeast Asian nationals holding a Ph.D. or Master’s degree or equivalent who are—or will be—engaged in the academic profession in South and Southeast Asia.
- Scholars, students, independent researchers, and public intellectuals, who are based in low- and lower medium-income countries as well as those who come from and may be living in post-conflict areas or areas where conflicts are still ongoing.
- The Association for Asian Studies membership is not a requirement.

Leibniz Institute of European History Fellowships for Doctoral Students
Applications are open for Leibniz Institute of European History Fellowships (IEG) fellowships for Doctoral students for the year 2022. The Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG) awards fellowships to young academics (doctoral and postdoctoral researchers) from Germany and abroad. Funding is provided for both doctoral and postdoctoral research dealing with the religious, political, social, and cultural history of Europe from the early modern period to 1989/90. Comparative, transnational, and transfer-historical research projects are particularly welcome, as are projects which deal with topics of intellectual, theological, or church history.
Organization
The Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG) in Mainz is a non-profit institution devoted to academic research that is not part of a university. It is an independent research institute and it has been a member of the Leibniz Association since 2012. Its purpose is to conduct academic research on European history. The Institute fulfills this purpose through the individual and joint research efforts of its staff and through the research scholarships and fellowships that it awards to academics both from Germany and abroad.
Benefits
The IEG Fellowships provide a unique opportunity to pursue your individual Ph.D. project while living and working for 6–12 months at the Institute in Mainz. The monthly stipend is € 1,350. Additionally, you can apply for a family or child allowance.
Eligibility
During the fellowship, you are required to reside at the Institute in Mainz. You actively participate in the IEG’s research community, the weekly colloquia, and scholarly activities. The organization expects you to present your work at least once during your fellowship. The IEG preferably supports the writing up of dissertations; it will not provide funding for preliminary research, language courses, or the revision of book manuscripts. Ph.D. theses continue to be supervised under the auspices of the fellows’ home universities. They expect proficiency in English and a sufficient command of German to participate in discussions at the Institute. The IEG encourages applications from women.
