Open Technology Fund awards are aimed to support organisations that promote secure access to technology and human rights. Payment is issued on completion of stated objectives, activities, and deliverables per a schedule outlined in the contract. OTF’s target support ceiling is $300,000, with most supported efforts receiving between $50,000 and $200,000. The deadline is on September 1st.
Eligible organisations should focus on improving the security, usability, and adoptability of existing open source internet freedom technologies and conduct research in this area.
Applications will be evaluated on the following criteria
- Quality of project idea
- Ability to achieve objectives
- Cost effectiveness
Preference will be given to organisations without a history of prior support, but with understanding of the surveillance, censorship, and security issues affecting the Global South. Strong priority goes to projects with the potential for immediate impact and long-term sustainability.
Main criteria
- Ideal applicants are making use of, support, or develop open and accessible technologies promoting human rights, and help advance inclusive and safe access to global communications networks;
- Applicants can be individuals of all ages irrespective of nationality, residency, creed, gender, or other factors. Beware that OTF is not able to support applicants within countries that the US has trade restrictions;
- Non-profit/non-government organisations and universities, for-profit businesses in any country are eligible to apply. Companies should have demonstrated experience administering successful projects, preferably targeting the requested program area.
