The Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) offers scholarships to foreign students to study for a period of one year at designated Japanese universities in order to deepen their understanding of the Japanese language, Japanese affairs, and Japanese culture. The deadline for applications is ongoing.
MEXT accepts applications from international candidates in order to foster human relationships that will become bridges of friendship between Japan and the candidates’ countries through study in Japan and which will contribute to the development of both countries.
Main criteria:
- Applicants must be citizens of countries that have diplomatic relations with Japan;
- Applicant screening will be conducted at the Japanese Embassy or Consulate in the country of the applicant’s nationality;
- Applicants must either have completed 12 years of regular schooling or have graduated from a school equivalent to an upper secondary school in Japan;
- Applicants must have Japanese language ability sufficient to receive an education at a Japanese university.
Scholars will receive a monthly allowance of 117,000 yen. Scholarship recipients will be provided with economy-class airplane tickets to and from Japan. Fees for the entrance examination, matriculation, and tuition at universities will be paid by the Japanese government.
