As with every year, these festivals hold the best films of the year most of which will dominate next year’s Oscars.
If you’ve been on the internet this past month, then chances are you’ve seen some of the controversy involving the movie Don’t Worry Darling. The only ones that got to experience the film itself though are the attendees of the 79th Venice International Film Festival in early September. These film festivals offer so much to the movie world that they can’t go unappreciated. All the most important interviews and revelations usually happen at festivals where all the actors and behind-the-screen filmmakers attend and pour their hearts out.
So, what are the most important festivals of every year, and which films to look out for in the upcoming festivals in these last few months of 2022?
TIFF Film Festival
Through September, the Toronto International Film Festival will take over the film lover’s world. Every year, films from all over the world, big and small, make their way to Toronto for a showcase of pure talent. After a difficult time just like the rest of the world due to COVID-19 for the last couple of years, this year’s event will be held mostly in person.
The already-released film Nope will be shown in IMAX for the special presentation. Though most people have seen it by now, people will get another chance to fall in love with it all over again. The Swimmers will open the festival and it will also release on Netflix in late November. Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans is perhaps one of the most noteworthy releases of the festival. The film will be 151 minutes long and the story is set post-World War II.
New York Film Festival
October brings with it the New York Film Festival. 32 films from 18 countries await you if you’re attending this festival.
Noah Baumbach’s White Noise is one of the key films from the festival this year. The director’s last feature was nominated for six Academy Awards, so this feature is also expected to do the same. In All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, Laura Poitras takes a look at the life of Nan Goldin and the downfall of the Sackler family. Armageddon Time starring such legendary actors as Anthony Hopkins, Anne Hathaway, and Jessica Chastain will also be shown at the festival. Other titles of note include Aftersun by Charlotte Wells, Corsage by Marie Kreutzer, and Decision to Leave by Park Chan-wook.
Raindance Film Festival
Lastly, the 30th edition of the Raindance Film Festival takes place in late October or early November. Located in the West End film district of London, if you love independent films then this is the place for you.
An audience of journalists, film executives, and film lovers will be able to witness the hidden or not-so-hidden gems of the year. The strong support for independent filmmakers is what sets this festival apart from some others. This festival is a good way to kickstart your career if you love making films but haven’t been able to reach an audience yet. Therefore, as an audience member as well, you can witness incredible short and feature films that you can’t find anywhere else.
Many films that premiere at festivals typically get a small theatrical release by December so that they can get those Oscar nominations next January. Though, nowadays streaming services have made a huge impact on festivals as well. The films that have Oscar chances that will release later on Netflix for example, usually get festival releases and then theatrical runs just before they drop on the service. Whether you’re a festival fan, a theater fan, or love to watch films at home, the chance for it is there, you just might have to wait a little longer for the latter.
