Extra Curricular Activities And Their Importance For Students

I am not sure how many of you feel you could go back to the student life and not worry about jobs, money, bills and other stuff. I always do. But mostly for the fact that I was always interested in doing everything else besides studying. Lets look at some of the examples of the extra curricular activities and how they help one indulge and learn while being a student.

  • Leadership Skills-

Schools, colleges, universities and mostly any educational institution have activities like debates, discussions and even clubs organizing more activities. Students who take part in these activities get a break from studies and it adds to their development because they might be chairing an event, hosting some show or playing some sports. All of these activities would develop the leadership skills in the individuals because at times they are nominated to lead a team and in some instances they emerge as a leader automatically while the activity is carried on. These skills cannot be developed without the extracurricular activities being part of the curriculum and academia.

  • Travel

A lot of universities allow their students to participate in national and international conferences and events. This is a great opportunity to travel while you are studying and also representing your institution. You gain perspective of a different subject matter and learn from peers from different countries and universities. The best part is you could be studying accounting but could be interested in HUmanitarian affairs or sustainability or Leadership skills and can attend any event/conference on these topics. This widens your horizons and gives you a great opportunity to travel. The icing on the cake can be the sponsorship by the school/university which is easier if you know how to present your case.

  • Overall Personality Development

As mentioned, the fact that you could attend a conference on any topic besides the one which you actually study, the leadership skills, the hobby or sports clubs you may join, all of these activities help groom your personality and make you ready to face the world and its challenges which come once you are done with the studies. The extra curricular activities add to the overall development of an individual and even though it might not be outrightly obvious, they shape an individual and groom the person. This can be in the form of increased self-esteem, motivation to perform better in every sphere; including education and better organization and preparation.

  • Better Time Management

Students who take part in extracurricular activities don’t have extra time than the other students who do not take part in any of the activities. They also study, give exams, go to classes and do everything that a normal student does. They are just good at time management and follow their passions. These people are the ones who have a hunger to do more and get the most out of their student life and thus manage their time with studies to do everything else they are interested into. These activities also make them social and easy to mingle with complete strangers and be prepared for many real life difficulties.

  • Time for Hobbies

There are a lot of extra curricular activities and they can be at the school or outside. Some people might love music, some might like dancing or singing or any other form of arts. The hobbies of people can be as different as the people themselves. These are all extra curricular activities that are easy to do while you are still a student. Once you get out into the big bad real world, you realize how important is time as a commodity and how much you miss taking time out for your hobbies. Student life is one of the best times to pursue your passions and hobbies.

  • Better Job Prospects

There are a lot of examples where people got jobs because they connected with the interviewer at some level. It might be a favourite movie of both of them, a favourite book or any other subject completely unrelated to the job and the position but the interviewer liked the candidate and he ended up getting the job. There are a lot of instances where some people got job because they demonstrated great multi tasking skills and managing a lot of things together besides their studies or in some cases where they had additional skills over the other candidates. While some of the things may sound not so believable, they actually do happen. Having extra curricular activities and certificates or some documentary proof that you were involved in them does help in getting some great jobs which most people do not get based on their academics only. Companies look at a lot of qualities. Leadership, multi tasking, time management, great communication and more which can be developed only if the student has been active in the extra curricular activities.

So there you are with a small list of how extra curricular activities add value and why they should be an important part of student life. This part of a person’s life is when they are young and energetic and they have ideas and motivation to do a lot. Its a very important part of life which should be utilized to the maximum possible limit so that it can be termed as the golden era which paves the way to a bright future.
