Multiple Sclerosis International Federation McDonald Fellowships 2022

In honor of Professor Ian McDonald, the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation has established the McDonald Fellowships, a two-year research grant, and placements. The applications have been opened for the same.

Organization

The McDonald Fellowship provides early-career multiple sclerosis (MS) researchers from low- and middle-income countries with the opportunity to work in a research institution outside of their home country. The fellowships are accepting proposals for virtual or local initiatives to circumvent the COVID-19 pandemic’s travel limitations. Participants learn skills or carry out aspects of cooperative research initiatives during the visit or virtual project. The MS International Federation is a one-of-a-kind global network of MS organizations, individuals living with MS, volunteers, and employees from all over the world. Our movement is made up of 47 MS organizations with links to many others. MSIF envisions a future free of Multiple Sclerosis.

Benefits

The fellowship consists of a two-year award of roughly £30,000 each year to cover travel and living expenses, as well as a £2,000 gift to the host university.

Eligibility

All candidates must:

• Be educated to postgraduate level (at least MSc, preferably Ph.D./MD) in an area relevant to multiple sclerosis
• Be citizens of a low- or middle-income country (all countries with a low, lower-middle, or upper middle income as defined by the World Bank)
• Focus their research on an area relevant to multiple sclerosis

Candidates must also be in one of the following situations:

• Working or studying in a low- or middle-income country (all countries with a low, lower-middle, or upper middle income as defined by the World Bank) at the time of nomination
• Working or studying in another country on a project which started within the six months prior to nomination
• Studying in another country on a project supported by an MS International Federation grant

Candidates are expected to return to their own countries at the end of the study period where they will contribute to advancing care and research in MS. The fellowship may also be used as a supplement for work related to MS by a candidate who has been accepted for training in a recognized institute (within the six months prior to nomination) but who doesn’t have enough money to cover the total cost.

2023 Human Frontier Science Program Postdoctoral Fellowships

Applications are open for Human Frontier Science Program (HFPS) postdoctoral fellowships. The Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) encourages scientific interactions across national and disciplinary borders by funding creative basic research that employs fresh and multidisciplinary approaches to understanding fundamental biological challenges.

Organization

HFSP provides three-year postdoctoral scholarships to bright postdocs who want to transform scientific paradigms by proposing a frontier-extending research project. The fellowships are held in a nation other than the one where the Ph.D. was awarded. Fellows are expected to offer new views on the frontiers of the life sciences, hence the Program invites postdocs from fields other than biology to apply their talents to a basic biological challenge.

Benefits

Fellows are granted a living allowance as well as a research and travel allowance. Depending on their specific situation fellows may also qualify to receive a child allowance, a parental leave allowance and a relocation allowance.

Eligibility

• A candidate who is not a national from one of the HFSP members (see list below) may apply to work only in a research institution in one of the member countries. A candidate who is a national of one of the member countries can apply to work in a research institution in any country.

HFSP member countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus (EU part only), Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Republic of Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

• Applicants must propose to work in a country different to the one where they did their previous Ph. D. work or first post-doctoral studies. For those institutions that are not classified as national, i.e. international or extraterritorial institutions such as EMBL, ICPT or ICGEB, the country in which the laboratory is located will be considered the host country.

• A research doctorate (Ph.D.) or a doctoral-level degree comparable to a Ph.D. with equivalent experience in basic research (e.g. a research based MD or medical Ph.D.) must be conferred by the start of the fellowship. It is not required at the time of submission. By “conferred degree” we mean you have received your diploma for the degree. The ‘conferral date’ is the date on the official Ph.D. document. Please refer to the application guidelines for information in case you were not yet awarded the Ph.D.

• Applicants must have at least one lead author publication by the submission deadline of the Letter of Intent which can be a manuscript (i) published in a recognized OA preprint repository, or, (ii) accepted for publication, (iii) in press or (iv) already published by a peer reviewed journal.

• Submission of a fellowship proposal at the Full Application stage however is only possible with a published research article according to points (ii) to (iv) above. HFSP only accepts full-length original research publications in English that were peer reviewed and for which the applicant must either be the single author, first author or joint first author. In a joint first author paper the applicant does not need to be listed in the first position, but the equal contribution of the authors must be clearly stated in all cases. In some cases the standard publication practice makes first authorship impossible (e.g. alphabetical listing of authors); these circumstances must be explained in the the application.

Scotland’s Saltire Scholarships

Applications are open for Saltire Scholarships in Scotland. The scholarships target students who aspire to become influential leaders and who have wide-ranging interests outside their studies, as well as a desire to broaden their personal and academic experience in Scotland.

Organization

The Scottish Government, in collaboration with Scottish universities, is offering Scotland’s Saltire Scholarships to citizens of select countries who want to study full-time Master’s degree in science, technology, creative industries, healthcare, and medical sciences, and renewable and clean energy at Scottish universities.

Benefits

Each award is worth £8000 to be used towards tuition fees for the duration of one year of full-time study on a postgraduate Master’s program at any of Scotland’s higher education institutions.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

• Have a conditional or unconditional offer of a place at a Scottish university on an eligible course that will be delivered physically in Scotland or via distance online learning or via a combination of both.
• Be a citizen of Canada, India, Japan, USA, Pakistan, or China (Hong Kong citizens are also eligible as it is a Special Administrative Region of China)
• Be able to demonstrate that they can meet the costs of living in Scotland and the remaining tuition fees.
• Not have previously studied in Scotland.
• Not have previously received a Saltire Scholarship.
• Meet the language requirements of the course.
• Complete an application form and submit it by the closing date of 31 May 2022.

Applicants must demonstrate an interest in studying in Scotland and/or at a specific Scottish university and aspire to work and study in a global context and take a position of leadership in their chosen career. They must also demonstrate a willingness and the necessary interpersonal and communication skills required to participate in the program of activities that accompanies the scholarships.
