Closet organisation is something that we all want to do, and it can have a big impact on our life. Here are the best tips to get it sorted.
Studies show that we only wear 20% of the clothes we own 80% of the time. The rest wastes away hanging in our closets.
Now let’s be honest; it doesn’t matter how ample our closet space is. It is perpetually tough to fit everything and organise it accordingly.
Less is More
Almost everyone in the world has clothing, accessories, or shoes that they don’t need. Consider going through your collection and purging whatever you don’t use.
Consider using the Marie Kondo method of holding each item and asking if it brings you joy. If it doesn’t, donate it to those in need.
Another popular method is to hang all your clothes on hangers ‘backward.’ After you wear the item, hang it the other way.
This way, you will visibly see what you wear and what you don’t. Consider donating most if not all items that remained unworn after several months or the season.
Think Seasons
They say you shouldn’t wear white after Labor Day, but that isn’t the kind of seasonal planning I want you to do.
If you sort your clothes by season, you can pack your off-season items to store in less valuable spaces.
Keep those winter coats in a box you need a stool to reach while your summer favourites take centre stage in a more accessible area.
Fill the Dead Space
Some closets only have one bar set high up. Unless your wardrobe is exclusively ball gowns and trenchcoats, you are likely to have some dead space.
Consider adding a set of drawers or even a cube shelf under your hanging clothes to maximise storage potential.
Think Outside the Box
It’s always good to think outside the box, or in this case, outside the physical closet. We don’t need to hide all our clothes away behind closed doors.
Consider getting a free-standing clothing rack.
Not only will you have more hanging real estate, but you’ll be encouraged to keep the displayed items organized as part of your room decorations.
Rediscover Doors
They say that when one door closes, another opens. I say that when a door opens, a haven of hidden vertical space is born.
Many people like to hang bathrobes on over-the-door hooks. Take it one step further by adding proper hanging shelving to all your doors.
Door hangings can have wire shelves for spices that are perfect for nail polish, bowties, and small accessories.
There are also hanging shoe racks that can hold up to 30 pairs of your favourite footwear! When the door is open, you barely even see what’s on the shelves.
However, if you keep it organised or colour-coded, it can also double as a decoration.
Stretch Small Spaces
You can find boxes in all shapes and sizes. Even the lowest bed or sofa can potentially allow a short but wide box to slide underneath. If not, consider raising your bed without breaking the bank.
You can buy literal risers, some even with convenient sockets for your electrical needs!
While filling the space under your bed is a no-no in Feng Shui, it can be the ultimate space saver. It can be worth sacrificing some chi flow for some extra breathing room in your home.
There are so many ways to organise our closets, even if we are working with little to no space. Purging some items from our wardrobe is a logical first step.
But if you can’t bear to be bare, take advantage of that every sliver of space.
You can find it staring at you from the middle of your wardrobe, under furniture, and even behind open doors.
Feng Shui is another great way to organise your home. Find out more about it now.
