Call for Code Global Challenge 2018 for Developers

David Clark Cause and IBM are inviting applications for the Call For Code Global Challenge, a worldwide, multi-year initiative that inspired developers to solve pressing global problems with sustainable software solutions. The deadline is on 31st of  August.

The competition asks you to outthink natural disasters and build the solutions that will significantly improve the current state of disaster preparedness in communities around the world.

Winners will be announced at the Call For Code Global Prize Event and Concert which will be held on October 13th, the UN International Day for Disaster Reduction.

First and second runners-up will receive $25, 000 cash prize, invitation to the Call for Code Global Prize Event, and long-term open source project support with The Linux Foundation.

Main criteria

  • The competition is open to developers worldwide. Teams of up to five participants are allowed. Teams have full ownership of everything they build and are free to do with it as they wish whether they win or not.

Some potential ideas to work on include:

  • Alerting pharmacies to increase their stocks of antibiotics, insulin, bottled water, and vaccines based on predicted weather-related disruptions;
  • Employing analytics to prepare for an impending disaster;
  • Using visual recognition to assess the impact of a seismic event and speed claims processing, reducing time to build back better;
  • Identifying and aiding people with reduced or restricted mobility who require special assistance.
