University students interested in astronomy or astrophysics, who are not yet enrolled in a PhD programme, are invited to apply for the summer research programme internship. The programme will be held either remotely or offline in Garching, Germany from 5th July 2021 to 13th August 2021. The deadline is on Wednesday 3rd February 2021.
The European Southern Observatory (ESO) is the foremost intergovernmental astronomy organisation in Europe and the world’s most productive astronomical observatory.
ESO provides state-of-the-art research facilities to astronomers. For six weeks in the summer of 2021, ESO will host the third summer research programme.
The applicants can choose among a wide range of research projects, covering many areas of astronomy from planets to galaxies.
The ESO summer research programme will also provide opportunities beyond research, including a series of lectures, a mini-workshop, a planetarium visit, an ELT instrumentation visit, and many social activities.
If it is possible to host the programme in person, travel costs to/from Garching will be covered for participants of the programme.
Accommodation will be provided free of charge. Students will also be provided with a modest stipend to cover living costs during the programme.
The deadline is on Wednesday 3rd February 2021.
Main Criteria
The programme is an opportunity for university students who are not yet enrolled in a PhD programme.
Students taking any astronomy, physical science, computer science or maths degree subjects are eligible to apply. However, the students are expected to have some knowledge of physics, programming, and data analysis techniques.
Students will be selected for the programme based on their academic achievements, research potential and likelihood to significantly benefit from the experience.
