Gender debate for European Commission  

An American political magazine held a two-day event in Brussels to allow a range of youth representatives to debate European affairs. The 20th EU fair was organized by Politico Europe and included an all-female youth panel debating key issues affecting the continent.

The event was attended by more than 700 international students and some high-profile figures, including Tibor Navracsics, the European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth, and Sport.

The all-female debate panel was asked whether there should a gender quota to ensure that there is an equal number of men and women on the European Commission.

Ana Lidia Pereira – president of the youth wing of the European People’s Party (EPP) – said no and argued that women should be on the Commission by merit and given a fair opportunity.

Tuulia Pitkänen – secretary-general of the Young European Socialists – disagreed and said that women have waited too long for equal representation.

Investment in AI university courses

Thousands of post-graduate students wishing to complete a Masters or Ph.D. in artificial intelligence (AI) will be funded by the British government under new plans to make the UK a hotspot of innovation in the new technology.

In a joint announcement, the health and digital secretaries said the government would spend more than £100m on training the next generation of AI experts.

The students will be educated at specialized AI innovation and research centers across the country’s nexus of universities. Participating institutions include UCL, Cambridge, Imperial College London, and the University of Glasgow.

Global corporations, including Google DeepMind and Cisco Systems, will also help fund new specialist AI courses, bringing total funding to more than £200m.

Business Secretary Greg Clark said, “This AI skills and talent investment will help nurture leading U.K. and international talent to ensure we retain our world-beating reputation in research and development.” 

“Artificial intelligence has great potential to drive up productivity and enhance every industry throughout our economy, from more effective disease diagnosis to building smart homes.” 

Health crisis in western youth 

Young people in the UK are the unhealthiest in Europe, according to a new report. The study found that people aged 10-24 in the country were more likely to suffer from a combination of poverty, obesity, and asthma than their counterparts in continental Europe.

Researchers analyzed data over a 20 year period for 19 EU and western countries and concluded that: “Despite living in the world’s fifth-largest economy, young people in the UK are experiencing one of the highest rates of severe material deprivation among the countries in our international comparison.”

The worst country for deprivation was Greece, followed by Italy and the UK, with Sweden coming top of the table. Young British people were the most likely to die from asthma-related diseases in Europe, although the problem is worse in New Zealand and the USA.

In terms of youth obesity, the US, Australia, Canada, UK, and New Zealand all occupied the bottom of the table. At the top were Japan and Italy.
