The Review of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

The fans of Marvel movies have been impatiently waiting for the sequel of Doctor Strange. Yet, has this movie met the viewers’ expectations?

Producing this movie was a challenge for the Marvel Cinematic Universe crew because of the pandemic which led the movie to be released later than expected. Despite that, additional notable changes have been made in this movie. Some scenes that were shot before the pandemic were removed and new footage was added. The movie premiered on May 6, 2022, and was a huge success. That’s not only because of the famous crew but also because of the work of the director Sam Raimi. In this edition of Doctor Strange, he chose to incorporate different movie genres such as action, sci-fi, and horror.

Fans were prepared to see something extraordinary from Sam Raimi, but they didn’t expect he would incorporate horror elements this time. Was it the best choice to make and did it make a difference in the movie industry? Let’s see!

The Storyline of the Movie

Doctor Strange is a superhero movie based on the Marvel Comics, elaborating the story of the main character Doctor Strange.

In this sequel, the protagonist meets with old and new Marvel characters, where he seeks other universes and encounters many mysterious things along the way. The main character, Doctor Strange, is played by the amazing Benedict Cumberbatch. On the other hand, Elizabeth Olsen has made an outstanding performance by playing the character of Wanda Maximoff.

Both of these two characters carry the storyline of the movie, which is quite sporadic and mind-bending. During the whole movie, Doctor Strange and Wanda are rivals. Each of them, including America Chavez — the character who can travel through universes — searches for the book of Vishanti. This book has the power to deflect magic, that’s why everyone is after it. They all need to break the magic so each of them will achieve their goals.

The runtime of the movie is two hours, unlike other Marvel movies that last two and a half hours. During this period, you will experience the suspense and you will try to connect the dots of each scene. In particular, the sequel of Doctor Strange is created with the idea of starting a new phase of Marvel storytelling, where zombies meet the universe.

More Than Just a Marvel Movie

Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the protagonist Doctor Strange, in one of the interviews said that the movie is all about different aspects of a person. The aim of it is to show how people can be good and bad at the same time and how they can balance it.

Most of the fans and even the critics stated that this movie feels like a combination of two different movies. The audience knew what to expect but there were multiple elements they didn’t think Raimi would include. Some fans and critics were shocked by these changes while others welcomed them.

Actually, in the beginning, the director had another idea but the Marvel studios asked him to add something that other Marvel movies didn’t have. They had a vision that this sequel needs to be outstanding and offer the audience something they can’t foresee. That’s when Raimi decided to incorporate elements of horror with sci-fi and action. The horror tone and psychological thriller vibes made the movie outstanding and confusing for some of the fans. They might have been exposed to soft psychological DC thrillers such as Batman but Marvel hasn’t produced anything similar to it until this sequel of Doctor Strange.

The movie Batman contained thriller and horror elements that created suspense to some extent. Whereas in Doctor Strange 2, you can notice a bit of blood, zombies, a shaky camera to warn the viewers of danger, jump scares before the kill, and villains looking straight into the camera. To get a grip on the complexity of the plot, you should watch other Marvel films, because some details of other movies connect to this one.

In conclusion, there is no definite answer to whether including horror elements in the movie was a good choice or not. Even the viewers have mixed feelings and thoughts about it. I might say, if you like Marvel movies, you can find this sequel quite intriguing and interesting at the same time.
