President’s scholarship program closed in Myanmar
Frontier Myanmar reports that the government shut down an international scholarship program due to the multi-million-dollar costs.
The scholarship, titled “President’s Scholarship Award” is the program that started in 2014. Back then, President U Thein Sein announced that students will have the opportunity to attend foreign universities “so that future generations can have long-lasting educational opportunities, and also [so recipients can] study subjects that will benefit the development of the country.”
However, National League for Democracy (NLD) took the office in 2016 and tried to cut down expenses ever since. Many students were left disappointed.
Education system in India faces new challenges
Hindustan Times reports that with 119 million young Indians aged 18 to 22, the current education system will soon become inefficient.
Since India is expected to become the most populous country in the world by 2030, there is a need for a more functional education system. Some of the current issues include low employability, low technology adoption in small cities, the lack of vocational training and others.
Dr. Vinod Bhat, Vice Chancellor, Manipal Academy of Higher Education states: “What we need is a roadmap that delivers a complete overhaul of India’s education system over the next five years.
A fundamental change is needed for the way education is perceived, imparted and utilized in India.”
Scholarship agreement between Nigeria and France
Vanguard reports that Nigerian Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje approved the funds (US$275,000) for Nigerian students who study in various postgraduate programs in France.
The program is part of the Kano/France Joint Scholarship Program, where alumni from tertiary institutions can continue their studies at masters and PhD level.
The main goal of the scholarship is to provide an opportunity for students to complete their studies without financial trouble.
Some of the universities include University of Lyon, Ecole Central Nantes, University of Bourgogne, Nice Sophia Antipolis, EPITA Paris, University of Paris Sud and University of Paris Sacley.
