Paid MJ Bear Digital Journalism Fellowship in the USA

The MJ Bear Fellowship identifies and supports digital journalists under 30 whose work represents the best of digital news. Six fellows from around the world will be selected for a fully funded one-year fellowship. The deadline is on 11 July 2019.

The one-year MJ Bear Digital Journalism Fellowship is designed to provide support and guidance to early-career journalists on a digital journalism project as well as their own professional development.

Fellows will receive an opportunity to speak at the One News Association’s annual conference and all expenses covered for the trip to ONA19 on 12-14 September 2019 in New Orleans, USA.

Three tailored coaching sessions for fellows will based on the projects that fellows are working on and the skills they are looking to build.

Past sessions have covered topics such as pitching projects, stories and oneself; career advancement in a changing world; audience engagement; marketing and entrepreneurship.

Main criteria

  • The fellowship is open to working journalists under 30 who are leading a digital journalism project. Applicants in 2019 must be born between 15 September 1989 and 14 September 1996. Applicants can be working either for a company or organization or be self-employed. ONA encourages freelancers and journalists from diverse backgrounds to apply. Full-time students are not eligible for this fellowship;

 

  • All application materials and submitted materials must be in English;

 

  • Candidates must provide their CV, a link to the project they are currently working on, a recommendation letter from an employer, instructor or technology partner who is not a personal friend or family member.
