International Mathematical Union Annual $10,000 Doctorate Scholarship

Professional mathematicians are invited to nominate highly motivated, aspiring doctorate students from developing countries for an annual $10,000 scholarship. Nominees must have a consistently good academic record and must be seriously interested in pursuing a career of research and teaching in mathematics. The deadline is on Monday 31st May 2021.

The International Mathematical Union maintains a fellowship programme to support postgraduate studies, in a developing country, leading to a PhD degree in the mathematical sciences.

The IMU Breakout Graduate Fellowships offers a limited number of grants for excellent students from developing countries.

The fellowship can cover the entire period of the doctoral program up to four years of the student (nominee).

The costs up to a maximum of USD 10,000 per year can be covered by the grant. These include tuition fees, accommodation expenses, travel expenses, or basic living expenses.

The fellowship is incompatible with any other scholarship.

The deadline is on Monday 31st May 2021.

Main Criteria

  • The nomination form has to be filled out online and be submitted by the nominator. Students cannot apply themselves for the fellowship.
  • Nominators must be professional mathematicians. Students must be residents AND citizens of a developing country.
  • The student must either be pre-accepted to join a doctoral programme or already be enrolled in a doctoral programme.
