Future Jobs: Green Professions

Many industries are currently facing sustainability-driven changes, opening up numerous positions in green professions. In this article we will cover the skills necessary to reinvent yourself in jobs that put great emphasis on biodiversity and preserving ecosystems.

According to the World Economic Forum report on the jobs of tomorrow, green professions will lead the way in growth and opportunity in 2020-2022. In this series, we discuss ways you can enter the job market in the field of your interest with the help of internships, scholarships, and new skills gained through online courses.

What Are the Green Professions?

According to the International Labour Organization, green jobs are positions in any economic sector which contribute to preserving, restoring, and enhancing environmental quality. Such activities tend to reduce the carbon footprint and environmental impact of companies and manufacturers by exploring alternative energy sources, protecting ecosystems, and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions.

Green jobs may be either modified versions of already existing jobs or completely new positions. Either way, green professions require the workforce to acquire new skills in order to keep up with this everchanging field. Some sectors, i.e. renewable energy, construction, environmental services, etc., may experience shortages in skills which can slow down the development of new technologies.

Hard Skills in Green Professions

In order to prepare the future workforce for green jobs, the World Economic Forum has come up with ten in-demand hard skills which will increase one’s employability and job-readiness.

The more transferable and universal skills include digital marketing, social media, and email marketing. Green marketers tend to apply all three of these skills to promote environmentally friendly services and products and follow purchasing trends for green products.  The professionals who work in these jobs develop marketing strategies, target the right audience for their products, and determine the effectiveness of the courses of action taken. The more hands-on skills include wind turbine maintenance and solar installation, which usually requires a two-year-long vocational training program at a community college.

Another transferrable skill which can be applied in a number of jobs is proficiency in Microsoft Power BI suite. This business analytics service aims to provide interactive visualizations and business intelligence capabilities through a simple interface. Its key components include a desktop-based application, mobile apps, and tools to sync external data in and out of Power BI.

To have a better understanding of requirements and job conditions you will need to consider, let’s have a look at some of the job openings in the field of green professions.
