Globally, women make up around 25 percent of the workforce in the aerospace industry. In an effort to carry out its mission that women have access to all resources and are represented in decision-making positions on an equal basis with men, Zonta International offers the Amelia Earhart Fellowship. These fellowships are rewarded to 30 women pursuing Ph.D./Doctoral degrees and conducting research in aerospace engineering or aerospace sciences.

The Amelia Earhart Fellowship was established in 1938 in honor of famed pilot Zontian Amelia Earhart. The fellows have gone on to become astronauts, aerospace engineers, astronomers, professors, geologists, business owners, heads of companies, and even Secretary of the US Air Force. The vision of Zonta International is a leading global professional organization empowering women through service and advocacy. Today, Zonta International is a global organization of more than 27,000 individuals in 1,133 Zonta clubs in 62 countries.

The $10,000 Fellowship is awarded annually to up to 30 women pursuing Ph.D./Doctoral degrees in aerospace engineering and space sciences.

  • Women of any nationality pursuing a Ph.D./Doctoral degree who demonstrate a superior academic record conducting research applied to aerospace engineering or space sciences are eligible.
  • It is imperative that students be registered in a full-time Ph.D./Doctoral program and have completed at least one year of that program or have received a Master’s degree in an aerospace-applied field at the time the application is submitted.
  • Applicants must not graduate from their Ph.D. or Doctoral program before April 2024. Please note that post-doctoral research programs are not eligible for the fellowship.
  • Classified members (club members and individuals with direct membership with Zonta International) and employees of Zonta International and the Zonta Foundation for Women, and their family members (ancestors, descendants, adoptees, siblings, nieces or cousins, and those of their spouse or cohabiting partner), are not eligible to apply for the fellowship.

The SDG Challenge 2022 is an opportunity for research teams to develop innovative solutions relating to challenges associated with climate, biodiversity, and the environment. Under this call, in partnership with Irish Aid, applications are invited that contribute to the interconnected areas of SDG 13: Climate Action, SDG 14: Life Below Water , and SDG 15: Life on Land.

SFI began with an intensive study commissioned by the Irish Government in 1998. As part of its response, the Irish Government initiated the Technology Foresight Fund and allocated a budget of €646 million. SFI was established in 2000 as a sub-board of Forfás to administer Ireland’s Technology Foresight Fund. Their organization’s research promotes and assists the development and competitiveness of industry, enterprise, and employment in Ireland. Oriented basic research is research that is carried out with the expectation that it will produce a broad base of knowledge that is likely to form the background to the solution of recognized, or expected, current or future problems or possibilities.

Funding is available for collaborative research teams based in Ireland and Irish Aid partner countries. Teams will receive up to €300k and work through a series of phases to develop their ideas. An overall prize of €1M will be awarded to the team demonstrating the highest potential for transformative impact.

The SDG Challenge is intended to support highly motivated, transdisciplinary teams committed to developing transformative, sustainable solutions that will contribute to addressing development challenges under the UN SDGs in Irish Aid’s partner countries. It is expected that teams will encompass a range of technical and non-technical skills to address barriers associated with challenge definition and solution deployment and that they will represent collaborative and equitable partnerships between researchers in Ireland and the partner country.

Teams must include expertise in the STEM research area underpinning the proposed solution but should also include knowledge or experience in areas such as, for example, international development, development economics, or behavioral or social sciences in order to inform the adoption and impact of novel interventions.

The last day to submit your application is September 22, 2022
