Christmas Baking At A Low Budget

Following our articles on budget meals, this one is dedicated to Christmas sweet. It's not in Christmas spirit so we won't limit it to a particular cost. Nevertheless, these recipes won't make a hole in the family budget.

Meringues

Meringues

Meringues are definitely one of the lowest cost and at the same time one of the easiest to make cookies.
It only takes egg whites and sugar in the ratio of: 1 egg white : 75 grams of powdered sugar. The process can be seen in our photo gallery.

Ginger Breads

  • 300 g rye flour
  • 150 g powdered sugar
  • 120 g honey
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp of ginger bread spices
  • 1/2 tsp of baking powder

Process:

Mix all the ingredients together into a smooth dough. Keep refrigerated overnight. Next day keep out of the fridge so that the dough reaches room temperature. Roll it out into a an approximate thickness of 0,5 cm and start cutting it out into the required shapes.
Keep the oven pre-heated at 180C. Keep the cutouts on a tray with a baking sheet. Bake them until they are golden colour. While still hot, brush the ginger breads with raw beaten egg so that they acquire a shiny look.

For decorating

  • 1 egg white
  • 180 g of powdered sugar

Keep whisking the two ingredients together until they are thick enough so that they keep shape. Place the mix into a decorating bag and you are ready to start decorating.
