Infographics: The World’s Most Expensive Skyscrapers

New York’s One World Trade Center topped the list of the ten world’s most expensive skyscrapers, followed by The Palazzo in Las Vegas, The Shard in London, Taipei 101 in Taipei and Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

The list composed by Emporis, the provider of building data and construction projects worldwide, put the One World Trade Center way ahead of other skyscrapers, with its 3.9 billion USD cost. Originally estimated at just half the cost, this sets a trend in the top ten list, with many of the featured buildings suffering staggering overruns.

The One World Trade Center, dubbed “Freedom Tower” during initial basework, is the main building of the new World Trade Center complex in New York’s Lower Manhattan. The center has been the tallest structure in New York City since 2012, when it surpassed the height of the Empire State Building.

The second place The Shard in London overshot its original budget of 550 million USD five times. The Shard, also referred to as the “Shard of Glass” and “Shard London Bridge”, is an 87-storey skyscraper that forms part of the London Bridge Quarter development. Its construction began in 2009 and The Shard was open to the public in 2013.

Compared to other much smaller buildings, the joint fifth-place world’s tallest building Burj Khalifa in Dubai has a fairly low cost of 1.5 billion USD, which puts it on the same position as Sheraton Huzhou Hot Springs Resort in Huzhou, China.

At number eight on the list, Herzog & de Meuron‘s Hamburg Elbe Philharmonie Hall has the distinction of being the only building on the list that is still under construction. With current costs standing at just over 1 billion USD, it is still behind Toyo Ito‘s 1.4 billion USD CapitaGreen in Singapore.
